Most of the time, when we think about ancient adventures, we probably at some point will come across a prophecy. So what is prophecy?
According to Wikipedia it is: In religion, a prophecy is a message that has been communicated to a person by a supernatural entity. Prophecies are a feature of many cultures and belief systems and usually contain divine will or law, or preternatural knowledge, for example of future events.
In the dictionary it is simply “a prediction” “a bleak prophecy of war and ruin” “prognostic, forcast”
proph·e·cy
/ˈpräfəsē/
proph·e·cy
/ˈpräfəsē/
And of course there is the Mirriam Dictionary:
prophecy
noun
proph·
variants or less commonly prophesy
pluralprophecies also prophesies
1
: an inspired utterance of a prophet
2
: the function or vocation of a prophet
specifically : the inspired declaration of divine will and purpose
3
: a prediction of something to come
So what makes the word, or indeed the very idea, of prophecy so mystical and thus intriguing?
I propose that we feel if we think we know what the outcome is, the path forward is more clear. But is that correct? Do we always make the same choices, or even better ones, just because we know how it ends?
For example, the woman who falls in love with Mr. Right. She enjoys a few years of love and laughter until the day he turns out to be Mr. Wrong. Now, if she knew the ending would she have changed her path? Would she have thrown away all the good times in fear of the bad?
Modern day prophets or “seers” often choose to keep this part of themselves very private. They choose not to make themselves the latest party favor, to then be tossed aside because people fear their secrets being known. Then you have the friends who accept and even believe in seers and their gifts, who attempt to use them as their personal info ATM.
On the other hand, you see charlatans and fakes, trying to make a dime off people who just want to believe.
Then occasionally you will find the real deal, out in public and making money. But then do you ask yourself is this person on the side of good or evil? It is a conundrum and likely causes more headaches than anything else. But yet, we still find that dark thrill of a palm reader, or tarot reader. We hand out dollars for the questions we want answered.
Sometimes, it might be a human who just wants to touch something mystical or divine. They just want to reach into a realm they can not go to.
The Bible has loads of prophecies that have came true and some left to still play out. We are warned, by God himself, and yet still see humanity racing towards Armageddon as fast as they can go. Many scholars teach the Biblical book of Revelations is being played out in real time, right before our eyes.
Christian teachers like Sid Roth and Jonathan Cahn all warn of the dire consequences of our actions, yet do we really see any substantial changes? If not, was there any use to the prophesy in the first place?
You have famous prophets like Nostradamus who didn’t reveal his prophesies until after his death. Then the content is written in riddles and innuendos, so difficult to really pin down.
So why are we interested in prophecy and prophets? Why do we seek out future answers? Would we really change anything?
