No disrespect to Plato, but have you ever wondered if he just made up the whole Atlantis thing?
Centuries after his death, we argue amongst ourselves about this very fact. Scholars to housewives seem to all have an opinion on the matter.
So to satisfy my own curiosity, I decided to look into ole boy Plato for myself.
Turns out there are no documented findings to support any other types of literature written by him that were comedy, fiction, or even ideological. He did not publish any stories, that I could find, at least, regarding anything like Bigfoot, UFOs, or other hard to believe theories. There were no mentions of him subscribing to any ideas not based on facts on any other subject.
So my question would be, why would this learned man, renowned for his mind, suddenly jack with us in this century by just hauling off and making up such a story?
What would he gain? He never told us he went there, he said he heard it from a relative of his named “Solan” who was apparently another of Plato’s ilk. Meaning, he was a no nonsense kind of philosopher.
Then I found from various reports, that Solan actually got the story from an Egyptian priest from the “sacred records”. Apparently they showed him the records and he then relayed it to Plato who wrote about it in 2 of his dialogues.
I guess to me, it kinda seems like Plato and Solan were too “fancy pants” type of guys to make up stories out of fantastical air. Secondly, it would seem that insulting an Egyptian priest would be an event that would spread like wild fire, even in those days, so starting a global event likely not happening either. There are many records of the high accord the priests of Egypt were held in. So accusing one of them of being a charlatan would probably not go over very well.
So my take, is that it is highly likely Plato did not lie about Atlantis. He was simply passing on information from a another highly reliable source, his relative, Solan.
Solan, for his part, also relied on another, if possible, even more reliable of a source for his information. He likely simply shared it all with his relative Plato. I can easily see the two of them with their curled hair bent over old documents discussing it.
Who knows, maybe we will hear more about these guys and maybe a priest in the Warrior’s of Atlanteon series by Beki Stewart.
